When I joined ABC we had just formed our new non-union electrical contracting firm. At that time I was looking to network and get support from the non-union community. As time has gone on, our needs and interests have changed. When we started to grow and needed qualified employees, we supported (and continue to support) the apprenticeship program. We also took advantage of the insurance program and continuing education. At this point, in our membership, the political aspect of the organization has become very important to us. Without a voice in local, state and federal government, we as contractors will continue to have adverse special interests dictate what we can and cannot do. If you truly want to make an impact on your business and your community, join us and lend a voice and hand.

I joined the student chapter of ABC while at Purdue University in 1982. As a union contractor at the time, it opened my eyes to all that ABC does within the construction industry and what being a “Merit Shop” contractor is all about. In 1986, Wurster Construction chose to leave the union and joined ABC of Indiana. It has been the best move we made in our 74 year history. The benefits we’ve enjoyed by being a member of ABC have far outweighed what we’ve put in.

Benefits of ABC

  • Access to “Merit Shop” subcontractors – we have access to an unparalleled group of trade and specialty contractors that have earned their reputations through quality craftsmanship. Their ability to deliver top notch projects has been proven in the open market.
  • Education and training – ABC of Indiana’s Apprenticeship program has provided Wurster Construction with craftsmen who have done more than classroom show and tell. The hands on training teaches students to learn by doing. I’ve also been impressed with ABC’s management and executive-level education programs.
  • National organization – Wurster Construction has hosted a national peer group and regularly attends the national conferences and meetings. The opportunity to meet with peers from similar companies to discuss issues, evaluate trends and learn innovative ideas is invaluable.
  • Legislative news – ABC sits on the front-line of the legislative issues that affect Wurster Construction as a small business and taxpayer as well as those that affect the construction industry in Indiana. Not only does ABC keep us informed about legislation and give us access to legislators and candidates, but they also advocate on a scal that would be impossible for us to achieve alone.

It’s been a privilege to serve on ABC Indiana’s membership committee, state board, executive committee and as the State Chairman in 2011.

Somerset CPA’s has been an member of ABC since 1993. I am on the Board of Directors and Executive Committee of the organization, serving as the State Treasurer (a position I’ve held for over 15 years). Along with other Somerset associates, I serve on several ABC of Indiana committees as well. We do this because we are dedicated to the construction industry and believe in the value that ABC brings to its members. Once you join ABC of Indiana, we are sure you will see that there are many opportunities to actively participate in the organization and progress into leadership roles. The education, networking, camaraderie and support you receive from ABC of Indiana and its members will far exceed the financial investment you make.
